Visore Lab and nhow Hotel unveil ‘Human Machines’ at Berlin Art Week
SEPTEMBER 11, 2023 → WORDS ADRIÁN GOMIS EXPÓSITO
Berlin Art Week is poised to witness a remarkable collaboration between Visore Lab, an inventive Parisian creative studio, and nhow Hotel Berlin. The result of this creative fusion is “Human Machines”, an avant-garde film installation that melds narrative storytelling, human movement, and technological innovation.
The installation’s core lies in its narrative, crafted by director Karim Coppola and brought to life by choreographer Sohrab Chitan, along with a talented ensemble including Paolo Busti, Gonzalo Alonso, Clara Bessard, Axelle Chagneau, and Mariano Carluccio. This artistic synergy promises a unique blend of storytelling and performance, uniting Paris, Berlin, and Madrid’s creative energies.
During the opening night, the Spree River will host an immersive boat event where selected talents can witness the film projection on the hotel facade. This experience exemplifies the connection between art and urban life that “Human Machines” epitomizes. The evening will go on with a live performance, bringing the film to life.
Beyond its visual spectacle, “Human Machines” seeks to ignite a dialogue about our evolving roles in a world shaped by innovation and interpersonal dynamics. Divided into four acts spanning 15 minutes, the film navigates the intricate relationship between technology and humanity, guiding viewers from the urban rush to a contemplative exploration of human existence delving deep into the recesses of a primal fear: the haunting dread of being replaced. However, the film transcends the conventional way of thinking about technologies replacing us and instead focuses on the profound unease of being substituted by other human beings.
Step into a world where boundaries blur, and humanity takes centre stage – a journey you won’t want to miss, told and portrayed by incredible creatives.
Sicky had the pleasure of chatting with the film director and founder of Visore Lab Karim Coppola. Here’s what he told us about some of the most intricate topics Human Machines talk about.
Have you ever felt the fear of being replaced?
Yes, I have felt the fear of being replaced quite often. I believe it’s a common feeling, particularly in modern societies, whether in work or love life. Society often portrays that there is always something or someone better than you, intensifying the fear of being substituted or replaced.
What or who do you think is most likely to replace us?
I don’t believe robots will replace human beings. When it comes to being replaced, it’s more about the feeling of not belonging somewhere or having someone come in and take something away from you. It’s important to ensure you have enough self-confidence to believe in yourself and not succumb to the fear of being replaced.
What makes us human?
Compassion is what makes us human. It’s the moment when we find ways to connect with others and understand how they feel.
Name the best conditions a human can have.
The best conditions for a human encompass societal, economic, and emotional aspects. Finding self-love is a crucial foundation and condition, linked to your environment and societal acceptance. The feeling of belonging and being in the right place is the ideal condition.
Do you enjoy the fast-paced lifestyle we live today?
The fast-paced lifestyle brings numerous opportunities. We can travel anywhere, change jobs easily, and have friends and lovers around the world, which I find enjoyable. However, it also carries risks, like losing focus on what truly matters in life. I’ve had several wake-up calls to slow down and focus on what matters to me in the long term.
Does society direct us in making decisions?
Society does influence us at various levels. There is a hierarchy that impacts our decision-making, whether we choose to take risks or go the safer route. It depends on the environment and opportunities available. We don’t all have the same opportunities, and it depends on where you grow up and the political system, whether it allows you to make decisions or not.
Do you think our current society works well or does it have some flaws?
Our society is riddled with flaws, but I believe we cannot make broad generalizations. It’s a matter of culture. While we have a global society, the rules and policies vary depending on where you live. There are advantages and disadvantages everywhere, and there is no perfection. It’s a long road ahead, but I’m optimistic that positive changes are happening worldwide. The world has become a more secure place, with significant progress, and we should continue to strive for progress and advocate for more rights.
Name one of your primal fears.
One of my primal fears is the passing of someone close to me.
What is movement to you?
Movement is life; it never ceases. It begins on the day you take your first breath and ends with your passing. It’s one of the most exhilarating aspects of existence.
How can feelings and ideas be expressed through movement?
In today’s world of extensive written and oral communication, gestures and movements can often convey emotions and ideas more effectively. A simple hug, for example, can communicate a great deal of positivity to someone. Feelings and ideas can be vividly expressed through movements, often opening people’s eyes to a deeper understanding.
