Montreal-based label Lafaille presents their FW21 collection, ‘Ego vs. Eco’
JULY 27, 2021 → WORDS AMANDA BREEZE
Benjamin Lafaille’s namesake label utilizes an experimental and sustainable approach across its subversive and eclectic collections. Helming from Montreal, the label’s unisex offerings include highly adaptable workwear, elegant wardrobe staples, and an assortment of easy-to-pair basics. Reconstruction and reprocessing methods are at the core of Lafaille’s refined aesthetic, which is evident in their latest FW21 collection, ‘Ego vs. Eco.’ Inspired by the duality between impulsive human behaviour and nature’s force, the collection features 18 looks that nod to forms of fetishization and the inevitable cycles of nature.
“Everything humans inflicted onto the planet have been projected back onto us as a form of karma and self-reparation. It is in our nature to push boundaries and to follow our impulses in a selfish way. This is felt through damage we’ve done to nature or through common fetishes,” Lafaille explains. The innovative assemblage of materials and use of pattern play is at the root of the FW21 collection – leather belts are defined as main components on dark denim pieces, while classic ties are transformed into dresses and convertible skirts. Graphic cut-out tops, reconstructed shirt dresses, and form-fitting suctioned suits are made with specialized techniques that perfectly capture Lafaille’s universe.
Unconventional tailoring and idiosyncratic designs offer a refreshing take on contemporary wear for all fashion aficionados. “Our mission is to provide garments that reprocess the established rules of fashion and will allow individuals to embark on a journey of self-expression,” says the designer. From a range of new and upcycled materials, the label redefines luxury ready-to-wear for a new generation.
