MARLO STUDIO Illusion Collection 2021-2022
Madrid-based independent fashion brand MARLO STUDIO unveils its new collection, ILLUSION. A turning point in their professional path which inaugurates a new chapter in their promising career, launched in 2019 with a clear vision that focuses on futurism and technological innovation, and champions diversity, freedom and sustainability. After publicly presenting their brand at a fashion show at IED Madrid exactly two years ago, the tandem formed by MARCIO LOPES and ZSOLT NAGYVÁTI —creative director and artistic director of the brand respectively— held a massive call to present their second proposal, ZERO POINT, coinciding with the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid. The Studio’s third collection, ARETTI ARENA, presented a few months ago in digital format, was clear evidence of the brand’s interest in exploring new formats, attracting enormous interest from the national and international press.
'They say their entire bodies are full of eyes – their backs, hands and wings. The power of the Cherubim is expressed in the idea of having many eyes, a complete vision to fulfil their tasks so that nothing can escape their gaze. They also say that when the Cherubim come to visit you, they leave behind one of their eyes so that you can experience the vision of divine light and see behind the illusion.'
MARLO STUDIO’s new collection, ILLUSION non-seasonal 2021-2022, is inspired by the dark side of life, in which cherubim converge with the protective angels that accompany us at every step we take. According to scripture, these secular guardians, the cherubim, also take on a role in which they become angels of death. They come for us at the end of our days, but sometimes they decide not to take us with them. Before departing, they leave behind one of their eyes so that we can see our own life differently.
Birth, life and death are certainties of the human life cycle. The beginning and the end, materialized at birth and at the end of life, are accompanied by guardian angels, who can renew us and show us a new way of living.
At the other end is death, feared by some, and welcomed by others. A trace of optimism that many cling to, trusting that they will live a new and satisfying experience, idealized by humans, and governed by wills and beliefs.
There is also freedom, beauty and sexuality, singular elements that coexist in the same individual. Self-determination when it comes to expressing ourselves and choosing our way in life, with the possibility of following a path full of dreams, achievements and carnal enjoyment. Beauty, a unique quality that each individual possesses and which differentiates us from one another in this sea of repetitions, where prevailing trends convert us into prototypes programmed to think and act according to a single, common pattern. And sexuality, the ultimate symbol of beautiful depravity.
Trying to express this duality of the human being in their ILLUSION collection, MARCIO LOPES and ZSOLT NAGYVÁTI combine materials such as leatherette, girdle, and breathable and waterproof technical fabrics. The predominant color, black, is combined with an intense mix of blues, grays and whites. All of this is accompanied by textures that coexist in the same shade, with different volumes and perfectly patterned and executed cuts.
The eye print, the symbol of the collection, symbolizes the eyes of the cherubim, which —as the prophecies claim— they leave as a gift on their visit to the earthly world, granting those they visit a second lease on life. Embroidery is found on girdle fabrics, where we find multiple eyes and the name of the collection itself, Illusion. The robotic prints represent transhumanism, one of the fundamental currents in the brand's philosophy—the beauty and acceptance of human evolution towards an unrevealed utopian future.
Leatherette, present in oversized outer garments such as coats, as well as in pants, tops and skirts inspired by a futuristic fetish, contrast with printed neoprene dresses inspired by the movement that vindicates ugly fashion.
