Marine Serre

WORDS JESÚS S FERRERA
Today’s presentation launching has come about through three equal pillars: a documentary, a book and the ready-to-wear collection titled CORE. All of that entails an intimate conversation with the designer herself. At the end of the day, the collection and its presentation’s aim has been to reflect the ubiquitous universe that Marine Serre is, which can not be shown in a short movie or a simple runway show.
The whole collection is born from a moment of reflections, capturing the essence of Marine Serre. This year, the designer celebrates 3 years since the launching of the brand, and for the occasion she has chosen to show what is most important to her in images, words and movement, focussing on fundamental issues: every detail, every fabric, silhouettes... Basically, her Ecofuturist ambition has been reflected in a creative way.
The documentary, the book and the collection are all divided into the same twelve chapters following the creative expression of three years of creative work: Fleece bedcover, Leather, Moire, Silk Scarves, Denim, Tartan Scarves, T-shirt Patchworking, Carpets, Crazy Pullovers, Household Linen, Workwear and Tailoring.
Regeneration is once again in the conversation (or the now widely used upcycling), as well as hybridity, as central parts at the heart of the aesthetic and the ethic of the brand. Marine has stated that the one thing she hates about fashion is trends. These values are also reflected in the garments, that remain there but continuously suffering reinterpretations.
In fact, the collection is composed by regenerated styles for its 50% consolidating the other half with products realized by using recycled fibres, showing in this way its compromise beyond just creating clothing and art.
Even if the emblematic moon logo has been present in almost all the looks of this collection, it is also true that this time, Marine Serre “became a brand, a house, better than a logo a family, perhaps even verging on the mystical”.
The goal with this collection was also “to bring more real life to the design process, bring garments into daily life”. And this was reflected with a cross-generational cast of characters, including kids. Ultimately, this presentation is a reflection of what Marine Serre is and wants to be. As they say in their press release: “CORE is a love letter to all who are feeling lost in a world of isolation. This year we found strength in our roots and imagination as a force of transformation”.
For us, this presentation has also been a statement of intent: the brand wants to be inclusive in all senses. Everyone can be part of the community, no matter the age, the gender, the way of living, the profession. However, this ubiquitous tribe shares something, probably creativity and a ground-breaking essence. I would venture to say without fear of contradiction that transgression is also a fundamental part of Marine herself.
