Mans SS22
“Summer Camp”
JUNE 21, 2021 → WORDS RONALD KAHIHIKOLO
Mans presented their latest collection “Summer Camp” as a short film at Milan Fashion Week Men's Collection - Spring/Summer 2022. The digital showcase took the form of a serene and atmospheric summer escape, concluding in a space where nature and garments appear to be exchanging dialogue. Walking down a picturesque pathway, we come face to face with a collection where the sun washes over a cast that highlights an optimistic future in a dreamy sphere.
Designer and founder Jaime Alvarez utilizes the camp-esque backdrop to jibe with a collection that embodies its surroundings. As the sun rises, an array of vibrant-colored garments breezes down the catwalk, carrying a playfulness on the backs of each model. Think relaxed silhouettes dashed over with a fresh and summery touch. These silhouettes aim to accentuate that effervescent feeling that accompanies us in the summer when sunshine sprinkles powdered gold over the grassy hillside and blossomed flowers.
This season offers up a slice-of-life spontaneity and shifts their focus onto a more youthful vibe to accentuate a breath of fresh air. In a post-locked-down world, as we tear off the invisible shackles that have put a halt on our lives, designers like Mans are embracing the chance to take us away from those dreary times.
There is something about the relaxed fit of the jackets, baggy shirts, and boxed shorts that evoke feelings of nostalgia when we skipped class to relax at the seaside. Each piece is altered and constructed with wool and cotton as in its own swimwear, giving a double functionality, as dressed and casual, shorts and trousers. The knitwear, on the other hand, maintains that same relaxed feeling, creating a summery touch through the composition of the wools. The fabrics are light and fluid and cotton seems to be at the centerfold, especially in jackets and trousers, summer twills, silks, and fine summer wools. Sophisticated, but at the same time, as light as a cocktail in the dazzling heat.
The “joie de vivre” feel-good summer prints and patterns give a personal take to a Hawaiian style or a faintly psychedelic twist through the collection's palette — a playful mixture of vibrant gradients and neutral palette colors convey a picture-perfect summer — one where we’re finally able to taste a sense of the new normal.
In outerwear, the classic Mans jacket pattern has turned into an underwear garment stripping it of armor and interlinings. It acts more like an overshirt than a jacket with tactical patch pockets and fabrics focused on workwear blurring the line between “Summer camp’’ and easy elegance as if you were dressed to enjoy your membership in a country club.
This is a collection of relatable summer boy-basics that are enhanced by the typical Mans charm - youthful garments but without shying away from the essence and the aim of challenging men’s tailoring.
