Jacquemus unveils “La Montagne”
JULY 1, 2021 → WORDS RONALD KAHIHIKOLO
Simon Porte is known for his off-Callender approach with Jacquemus and has not staged a runway show event since spring 2021, which was held in a wheat field that was an hour outside of Paris. The designer previously teased samples of a few pieces earlier this month on Instagram but alas, the highly anticipated coed collection titled “La Montagne,” has finally been unveiled to a live audience.
Jacquemus has become synonymous with summer and the dreamy designs inspired by the South of France resurged with a star-studded collection of fresh designs. “La Montagne” translates to “The Mountain” in English, is a breezy tribute to the outdoors and acts as an exclamation of hope that glimmers through as we slowly make our way back outdoors. The brand is renowned for its luminous color palette, tantalizing silhouettes, and witty accessories. This collection is no different and expands on past techniques to bring forth an assemblage of 60 looks that mix day and night with summer-ready hues and neutral colors.
"For this collection, after such a particular year, I wanted to gather people inside and share a fashion moment together,” he wrote on Instagram. “I wanted to focus on the clothes, the silhouettes, the colors, the fabrics, the details, and the energy of the models, I wanted the set to be minimal and sharp, recreating an abstract artistic mountain that portrays the inspiration of the collection."
The typical Southern France insouciance of looks includes a color-blocked fantasy saturated over with tactical outerwear and delicate silhouettes. The cropped tops came in a variety of asymmetrical cuts for both men and women, some of which included tiny zip-ups and metal clasps that held them together. Additionally, the cropped jackets are washed over with classic neutrals, rich colors, and floral prints.
Knitwear was featured heavily on the looks and made its appearance on balaclava’s, sweatshirts, bralettes, and crop tops. Another element that was heavily featured was drawstrings, which appeared on some of the pieces and mimicked the ties that you usually find on hiking gear. The suits came in many iterations that bounced from sun-washed blues, Vibrant pinks, and darker tones with slits at the wrists and contrasting pockets on the outside. The skirts and dresses came in various cuts, shades, and tactical fabrics with contrast stitching.
The footwear included mid-height heels with shearling accents, utilitarian sneakers that come in different colorways, and hiking boots that come off as a peculiar type of chic. The shearling accents appear once more on the mid-sized bags and totes. They also had mid-sized crossbody bags that included double straps and two-toned leather detailing.
With this new collection, La Montagne reigns in new beginnings in life and brings forth designs made for everyone from all backgrounds. It's the simplicity dashed over with a touch of darkness that accentuates the careful detail that went into every design.
