How Far Are We Able To Go? – “The Virtue Of The Virtuality”
‘How far are we able to go’ showcases how a single individual can acquire as many identities as desired, aiming at social and self-acceptance. Limits and boundaries that for so long have been fundamental for society are now starting to fade away to leave room for a new era where you can be whoever you want, whenever you want.
Where is the limit between reality and virtuality? - The borderline between both worlds seems to be blurrier lately. On the one hand, the new world, virtually constructed, reflected on our screens through pixels and stored on the cloud. It seems to comfort people, make them happier, make them wiser - the knowledge at the reach of a click. The virtual world is ruled by freedom: we can reach the independence of our minds and bodies, using our skills with no limits, as the virtual world is not prisoner of the physical rules.
On the other hand, the reality, considered a harsh piece of truth. We live our life in the real world surrounded by gender etiquettes, clothing rules and stereotypes of what we should be or how we should behave. Some people will obey these rules, they will feel balanced and some of them will even create a personality based on the world they live in just to fit in. However, some individuals will feel excluded, marginated or isolated from the real world. The way to escape is through the screens, connecting with people that may understand them or that just accept them shaping their body to a new level, breaking the rules they were taught during their lifetime. We are creating new personalities, a whole new understanding of social life.
Some individuals may wonder if that virtual world will ever become the reality, if those two worlds will ever merge into only one. In fact, this is already happening. Both realities emerge every single day when new identities are created on the cloud. One single individual can construct a variety of identities, with both personality and image can be shaped on-demand. Modifying the appearance online is part of our routines, we can use filters or photoshop or even surgery to achieve the desired look; extra-terrestrial shaped eyes, blacked out iris’ or animated figures. Everything is possible in the virtual world, because in this dimension the limits of reality are not yet drawn.
If living in a virtual life would make us happier, it is still a question without an answer. Some people might feel happier living in a virtual reality but the feelings and experiences we can obtain through human touch cannot be yet represented through virtuality, but we won’t give up in our search for a life in the idealistic world. Thus, the future will tell how far we are able to go.
