Dior × sacai
JUNE 17, 2021 → WORDS RONALD KAHIHIKOLO
This season, the House of Dior joins forces with the independent label sacai on a project that represents a creative dialogue sparked between two designers, two heritages, and two cultures. Artistic Director of the cult French house Kim Jones integrates alongside Chitose Abe of the Japanese brand to merge two colliding worlds into an ultramodern capsule collection. A variation on the iconic Dior logo epitomizes the approach, within the “i” of Dior can be found the name of sacai, creating a hybrid DNA strand that fuses the unmistakable identities of both labels, aesthetics, and outlooks.
The entire collection embodies the core values of both brands with garments that combine Dior tailoring with sacai’s sportswear hallmarks, the unmatched savoir-faire of Dior blended with sacai’s technicality. Dior’s silhouettes — overcoats, the Tailleur Oblique, and floral decorations are injected with a dose of new fabrics, techniques, and details all of which are drawn from the sacai universe. The color palette is predominantly made up of black and white and a creative exchange between two cultures manifests a shared vision. The fusion of the two styles is also reflected in the use of Japanese denim detailing with the refinement of emblematic Dior pieces, including soft berets formulated by Stephen Jones. Each key piece is re-examined and reworked, placing Dior under a new spotlight and offers a new perspective that zeroes in on the history of Dior.
The various bags in the saddle universe are distinctive for utilitarian embellishments — like pockets or drawstrings elements — specific to the Japanese brand that enhance the viability of the clothing and accessories. The combination and interplay of materials such as nylon and leather come in vibrant shades of olive and orange, echoing the timeless sacai bomber jacket that is still making waves today. An added layer of texture is introduced to the soles of the Dior Snow and Dior Explorer Boots which perfectly reflect sacai’s inventive vocabulary. A final touch of originality is accentuated with the Christian Dior Icon Logo in gold-and silver-finish brass punctuated with sacai's signature pearls.
Each look is carefully curated through the lens of both designers and is a direct result of a discussion that transpired between Kim Jones and Chitose Abe — two long-time friends, and now creative collaborators coming together to design a collection that we've all been waiting for. It’s a new viewpoint on both brands, framed through the heritage of Dior.
For now, Dior has offered us a look into the collection with a few images that are embraced by a handful of what’s to come when the full collection makes its official debut in November 2021.
