Asphalt Kids
We often hear that we come from nature, but for our generation, the truth feels different: we come from asphalt. Many of us were born and raised in big cities, where our first playgrounds were streets, sidewalks, and concrete courtyards. We are the children of the urban landscape.
Asphalt Kids is a visual story about a generation shaped by the city. Shot in the streets of Paris, the series brings back the spirit of childhood through playful poses and simple objects placed in an urban artificial object and structure. The models interact with city structures as if they were slide, jungle gym from playgrounds reminding us of how we once used anything around us to play, imagine, and escape.
The project is mainly inspired by my own childhood memories growing up in big city Seoul, a place where tall buildings and busy roads were a part of everyday life. Through this work, I look back at where I come from and explore how the city shaped the way I see the world today.
