MPa: A Different Perspective on Systems

MPa Sound System: Reconstructed Structures
Mass-Produced articles (MPa), PLASTICPRODUCT have long reconsidered overlooked elements through different perspectives, reconstructing them into experimental forms across objects, garments, and various mediums.
Director Seo Mincheol operates outside conventional systems and established norms, and instead seeks to reconstruct an experimental structure through MPa.
This project connects Hannam and Tokyo, extending that approach into the format of a sound system.
Instead of creating a unified system, it explores experimental modes of sound generation and output by repositioning the frame within established and standardized sound formats.
The focus shifts from material to structure, and from function to flow.
MPa treats the sound system itself as a medium, reconstructing the way sound is produced and transmitted through a different perspective.

MPa Sound System: Multimedia Room (Seoul)
The first work, “MPa Sound System: Multimedia Room (Seoul)”, took place at MPa’s showroom in Hannam.
Rather than treating Zoom as a mere communication tool, the work recognizes it as a medium for emotional transmission.
Compression and latency, typically minimized, are retained and used as structural elements of the sound. Around 20 computers and speakers are arranged in a row.
Within this structure, VQ (Voboku) generates sound using an iPhone.
The performer, the sound, and both on-site and remote participants are converted into data within the system, which is then distributed across devices.
The audience is no longer fixed. By navigating screens and shifting attention, they operate as part of the system.

MPa Sound System: Discs (Tokyo)
The second work, “MPa Sound System: Discs (Tokyo)”, expands this experimental approach into a physical structure.
It focuses on a more direct and intuitive transmission of sensation (not only sound).
At the center of the space, a circular disc is installed, where VQ (Voboku) generates sound.
The sound is emitted through speakers embedded beneath the disc and transmitted through the floor structure itself.
Speakers are directly integrated into the floor structure to create vibration, allowing sound to be experienced not only through hearing, but through the body.
Cushions are arranged along this structure, and the audience experiences sound physically while seated on them.
From the center, sound extends outward along the structure. Connected discs and speakers disperse it throughout the entire space.
The cushions are also positioned along this flow, placing the audience not around the sound, but within its path.
For this project, several T-shirts were produced as experimental instruments to be performed within the sound system itself. Irregularly attached zippers create different sounds through friction and vibration, while VQ performs directly on top of the system, recording these sounds live and reconstructing them into new compositions through his own method of mixing.
Likewise, the zipper no longer remains simply a fastening device. Through VQ’s performance, friction, vibration, and irregular movement are transformed into sound and reconstructed as part of the system.
In this work, sound does not remain confined to a single device. Objects and garments function as elements that transmit or respond to sound, allowing it to extend across space and the body as a continuous flow.

The Significance of Reconsidering Perspectives
For MPa, this work is not a standalone project, but part of an ongoing experimental approach.
It shifts the frame of familiar standards and ways of judging.
Conventional performances are often understood through the quality of sound itself.
PLASTICPRODUCT’s performances work within familiar formats, while slightly redirecting how they are perceived.
Sound, structure, space, and garments exist in different forms, yet can all be reconstructed through the same logic. Clothing does not remain limited to clothing, but can shift into other roles through cognitive + utility based thinking.
Other systems can also be reconsidered in similar ways.
MPa has continuously focused on proposing different perspectives and experimental structures.
Without alternative approaches, people naturally continue following familiar systems and conventions.
Through reframing perception, the audience is encouraged to approach the work as a question rather than a fixed conclusion.
