Ik was wel vaker vrolijk
This collection is our curation of the everyday overlooked and the left to be forgotten. Cracked paint, sun bleached prints, traditional techniques, objects left to gather dust, forgotten garments and cartoons of the past. This all with an overarching Dutch theme as the basis.
‘Ik was wel vaker vrolijk’ being the name of our collection refers to the Dutch animated series Alfred Jodocus Kwak, which has faded from cultural relevance over the years. Alfred serves as a recurring character throughout our accessories, in the form of a dusty magazine or a scrunched up paper bag.
The design philosophy of this collection is to merge these previously mentioned elements; in example an old dusty tracksuit which shape-wise resembles the wrap-around scarfs worn in the 1900’s in the village of Stein. A military surplus cape with a cracked surface covered in our interpretation of the traditional Staphorst village dot work pattern. Which we have merged with the floral print as seen on the bathing suit of our muse Little Edie from the documentary film Grey Gardens. The documentary film Grey Gardens, in which the viewer looks into the lives of upper society ladies who became reclusive, with their luxury goods now looking disheveled. Became a huge inspiration for the collection.
For the footwear of our collection we are collaborating with Viking. A Dutch heritage ice skating brand who pioneered the klapschaats, an ice skate with a clapping heel. Natural ice skating is a declining tradition for the Dutch, due to climate change. Viking is providing us with their company’s production failures, which we repurpose into a walkable version. This footwear is technically realized in collaboration with Miro Lino. Besides the ice skate, also the textiles used in this collection are made from dead stock discarded material.
All the fabrics in the collection feature a trompe-l’oeil technique illusion. We realize this through de-coloring, flocked dust, metallized bags, paper coated prints, silkscreened Staphorst dot print, laser cut knit textures in leather, laser cut layered wool for fur, laser cut cracks, double bed knit with devore cracks, laser cut lace and distressed embroidery.
