Hey AMÉMÉ, it’s great to have you here with us. How are things? How has this year been shaping up for you so far?
This year has been a profound journey of learning and reinvention for me. I just completed an extensive summer run, and I am on the brink of releasing a series of powerful records that I am incredibly excited about.
You have several exciting releases lined up on labels like Armada, Warner, and Get Physical Berlin. Can you share how these collaborations came about and what fans can expect from them?
Many of these collaborations emerged quite organically. The projects with Get Physical and Azzur began when I reached out to my friends, Birds of Mind and Baron, to request the stems for “Mi Pena” and “Me Gusta”. In contrast, with the Warner and Armada collaborations, they approached me, and we quickly discovered a wonderful chemistry, making the process very seamless. However, some of the releases did take longer to come to fruition.
Your upcoming release of Angelique Kidjo’s track is highly anticipated! Can you share what it was like to work on a remix for such an iconic artist and five-time Grammy winner? What can listeners expect from this collaboration, and how did you approach blending your sound with her unique style?
Angélique Kidjo is an iconic artist who has significantly impacted African music. She has been a major influence from my childhood, with her hits frequently playing on TV and radio. When I was approached to work on the 30th anniversary remix of her song “Agolo”, I could hardly believe that I had the opportunity to contribute to a record that is so integral to my identity. As we collaborated, we discovered that we are actually related, which made the process even more special. Bringing my reimagined version to life came naturally, as the song has resonated with me for the past 30 years. It perfectly blends emotion, groove, and rhythm. I’ve been playing it all summer, and it’s become a favorite among the crowd.

Fashion and music both play key roles in your creative identity. How do you see these worlds intersecting in your work, and what do you hope to bring to both worlds?
Absolutely, fashion is one of my creative outlets. Seven years ago, I launched my One Tribe label collective, which began as a fashion project that beautifully blended African prints with Western designs. I firmly believe that fashion and music complement each other seamlessly. I envision myself reconnecting more with the fashion world through collaborations with brands that resonate with my vision.
I also have a particular passion for eyewear; in fact, I probably own more pairs of glasses than shoes!.
Reflecting on your diverse experiences, what has been your most memorable event in a fashion-focused setting, and how does it compare to your favourite experience at a music-centric event? What made each of these experiences special for you?
I had the privilege of attending the Louis Vuitton show that celebrated the life of the late Virgil Abloh, and it was truly a mind-blowing and inspiring experience. The collection was vibrant and extraordinary, and the event brilliantly integrated every element, including music, visuals, and even fireworks. As I mentioned, music played a significant role in this celebration, and I firmly believe that fashion and music go hand in hand.
You recently did an impressive 2h Essential Mix on BBC Radio 1 reaching listeners worldwide. How did you approach creating that set and what message or vibe were you hoping to communicate through the music?
The concept behind my essential mix was to encapsulate a year’s worth of creative work, focusing on reimagined versions of iconic records inspired by African music. Throughout the year, I incorporated these tracks into my sets, and I wanted to present them in a two-hour compilation that offers listeners a glimpse into the essence of my performances. This project holds a special place in my heart, as it reflects my journey and passion for this music.

Your label’s takeover ‘One Tribe x Jolene Art Basel’ event in Miami sounds exciting! Can you share what you have planned for this event and how it reflects the essence of the One Tribe brand?
Yes, after showcasing in Amsterdam, El Gouna, and New York, we are finally heading to Miami! The event will feature several individual sets, culminating in a family style b4b at the end of the night. This is an essential part of the DNA of our gathering, as we will celebrate African-inspired electronic music with our friends & family. We’re excited to share this experience with everyone!.
As you continue to shape the landscape of your label, are there any other projects you have on the horizon? and what can your fans look forward to in the coming months?
We are currently focused on reinventing the landscape of compilations. In the near future, we plan to release fewer tracks while emphasising quality over quantity. Additionally, we are excited to reintroduce the fashion aspect of our label, along with exploring other intriguing lateral collaborations.
