JUNE 24, 2021 → WORDS RONALD KAHIHIKOLO
The Louis Vuitton Spring Summer 2022 Men’s Collection by Virgil Abloh is captured in the film ‘Amen Break’, which features a broad cast of talent: GZA, Goldie, Saul Williams, Issa Perica, Caleb Femi, JIM JOE, Kandis Williams, and more. Directed by Mahfuz Sultan, the film aims to explore the idea of transmission: the act of passing something from one person to another, activating waves of change across generations, and impacting the lives of others.
The film exhibits a story about a father and son who find a way to be united by an unnamed loss, crossing through a dream-like world to deliver a message to the other side. The film decided to highlight supporting figures in life: those who make it a point to observe life’s supporting figures: those who embark on long journeys to make the passage less difficult for those who follow; who fight the battles for the future of others, break the boundaries, and dismantle archetypical notions. It’s a careful reflection on a monumental moment in black art and culture when electronic music and hip hop emerged like twins from the same egg and trickled into every part of the globe.
An abstract interpretation of the story of Lupe Fiasco, an American fine artist and rapper who grew up on the Southside of Chicago amid the gang turbulence of the 1970s and ‘80s. Fiasco’s father — an African drummer and member of the Black Panther Party — organized martial arts studies as an alternative path so young people could make it out.
By employing the philosophical values of martial arts as a solution to the problem, Fiasco impacted a generation of kids with ideas of peace, understanding, and empowerment. A local legend, his work in the community served to neutralize archetypical preconceptions and open a gateway of opportunity previously obscure.
The collection itself easily demonstrates Abloh’s creative genius through innovative designs that are made up of smartly cut suits saturated in tropical hues and accompanied by over-the-top silhouettes that come off as costume-like. The multidisciplinary designer delves headfirst into the polarity of subcultures and their paradigms to fully explore the angle that he took on this collection.
Each look is carefully crafted from head to toe with signature elements injected into each piece. The boxy cuts are washed over with a vibrant selection of colors that range from hot pink, electric blue, venomous green and are fused with pastels to add a balance to the equation. It’s a sophisticated look branded with a youthful glow to cater to everyone who has their eyes on the brand.
The selection of bold graphics breathes chaos into this playful collection and exudes a peculiar type of elegance through psychedelic prints, tie-dye, and monet-Esque splotches. These prints include subtle splashes of the iconic LV monogram logo that appear in random sections of the looks. The finishing touches explore different degrees of layers and asymmetrical cuts all while reinforcing Abloh’s ultramodern vision with epicene looks.
